Hey there! I am also thrilled to share the story of how I had a great experience at Illuminate SF 2025. I went to the festival for the third time, and I can't wait to share with you all the amazing light displays I saw. I am a lover of glittery art and colorful evenings and I am eagerly anticipating this event throughout the year!
The Illuminate SF Festival of Light is a unique festival that is held every winter in San Francisco. It transforms the entire city into a large art gallery containing fantastic light installations. The best part? The majority of these gorgeous exhibitions are totally free! This year it had more than 40 installations in 17 neighborhoods. Of these I spent several weekends strolling round, and you shall hear of the very best of them you must not miss.
What is Illuminate SF? Let Me Explain!
Illuminate SF is a yearly light art festival that occurs in late November up to the month of January. In 2025, the festival will be held November 24, 2024 to January 31, 2025. That leaves us lots of time to view all the marvelous art!
The festival has permanent and temporary sites (only present during the festival). This year they have five new installations, which have never been observed. I tried to see each one and some were so good I visited them more than once!
The light installations are located everywhere in San Francisco. They are available in such neighborhoods as the Embarcadero, Civic Center, Golden Gate Park, and even at SFO airport. I visited the official Illuminate SF map and designed my adventure. The map was helpful to locate all the best positions without losing my way!
What are the Best Installations at Illuminate SF 2025: My Favorites!
SPECTRA: The Light Wave on the Roof
The name of one of the most coolest new installations of 2025 is called SPECTRA. The 1,271 programmable single LED lights on the roofs of the Asian Art Museum and the San Francisco Public Library make up this incredible sight. I just couldn't believe what I was seeing! The lights wave and glitter in beautiful ripples that appear to be dancing to music.
What makes SPECTRA unique is that it is audio-reactive, or the lights respond to sounds around them. As I clapped my hands I watched little twinkles answer! The installation covers 1.6 acres and forms a lovely wave in the sky. It is an ideal backdrop to our beautiful building City Hall.
The Bay Lights: light show the most famous in San Francisco
The Bay Lights can not be included on any list of the best installations at Illuminate SF 2025! It is most likely the most well-known light art object in our city. It has 25,000 white LED lights along the western portion of the Bay Bridge. I feel my breath is taken away, when I see it glittering in the dark!
The Bay Lights is an artwork of an artist Leo Villareal. It debuted in 2013 and was popular enough to be made a permanent installation. Illuminate returned it in an even better way in 2025 after a successful 11 million fundraising campaign. The lamps produce different designs which resemble sparkling diamonds on the bridge.
WELCOME: The Biggest Pride Flag in the World
Although this is not part of the winter festival, I need to tell you about the amazing WELCOME installation that takes place during the Pride Weekend. In 2025 it came back June 27-29, but it is so good I thought I would add it anyway!
WELCOME makes the world's biggest Pride flag with laser space cannons that run the length of Market Street. Six of these beams (purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, red) are four-mile long! By 2024, 20 lasers appeared to symbolize 20 years of marriage equality in San Francisco. In 2025, it was even larger and more successful!
Entwined: Golden Gate Forest in the Magical Forest
Entwined is a golden gate park interactive art you will love! Artist Charles Gadeken has turned the Peacock Meadow into a woodland of light-up trees and statues. Since 2020, the artwork has been included as part of Illuminate SF, however, in 2025, it will be bigger and more interactive than ever.
I was roaming in the winding path, resting under the colorful trees, and looking at the nature inspired sculptures flowering with light. The most exciting part is that you are allowed to touch some of the sculptures and change their colours! I tapped one of the trees and made it go through all the colours of the rainbow.
The Mind-Bending Moscone Center Exhibit
Point Cloud by Leo Villareal (the same artist as The Bay Lights) is another exhibit that I really like at Illuminate SF 2025. This is a permanent installation mounted on the side of the Moscone Center in the Yerba Buena area. It has thousands of LED lights which form fluctuating patterns and outlines.
The lights are clustered in groups which resemble sparkling clouds - hence the name of the point cloud where there are clouds! The patterns vary gradually and in a few cases they appear to dance and move. I would go sit on a bench on the other side of the street and look at the patterns awhile. It's very relaxing!

More Cool Installations to see
My Illuminate SF adventure was full of excellent light shows! The following are others that are certainly worth a visit:
- Psychedelic Photosynthesis: This is a floating projection on the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park alluding to the Summer of Love in San Francisco. The beautiful building is alive with color due to the colorful patterns that are used.
- Day for Night: Jim Campbell is the creator of this installation on the Salesforce Tower. It forms light patterns that are visible everywhere in the city. I like to look up and make it shine with other neighborhoods!
- Buckyball: This is a second Leo Villareal installation at the Exploratorium. It is a curved ball of light-emitting diodes that varies gradually in form. It is particularly beautiful as it has been reflected in the water surrounding it
- Hope Will Never Be Silent: This is a permanent installation at Harvey Milk Plaza in the Castro district to commemorate Harvey Milk. It is so beautiful and significant as it reminds us of the meaning of equality and acceptance.
Plan a Illuminate SF Adventure
Having been to numerous light art shows I have learned some tips on how to enjoy myself most. These are my tips to visit Illuminate San Francisco 2025:
1. Dress warmly! It can get cold in the nights of San Francisco, particularly during winter. Cozy clothes, warm coat and footwear. You will do lots of walking between installations!
2. Use public transportation. Parking can be a challenge and most of the installations are near BART or Muni stations. The Muni bus system enabled me to move around easily to different neighborhoods.
3. Start early. I prefer to start off at dusk. In that manner, I will be able to observe the installations during the daytime and at night. Others show absolutely different appearances in other light!
4. Get the official map. All installations have a map on the Illuminate SF site. I also used it to map my route and ensure that I did not miss anything substantial.
5. Take your time. Don't hurry between the installations. Take time to explore each one of them, observe how the lights vary, and actually feel the art. There are patterns that can take several minutes to repeat!
6. Bring friends! Nothing is better than having company. I have attended with my family and a few friends and everyone enjoyed it by sharing our favorite pieces.
7. Take pictures but have fun during the same. They are highly photogenic installations, but just remember that you should occasionally keep your phone at home and simply admire the beauty with your own eyes.
My Last Reflections on Illuminate SF 2025.
The experience of going through Illuminate SF 2025 was wonderfully magical! I observed numerous wonderful light shows that helped me to like both art and my city in a different way. The festival succeeds in making San Francisco a light and color fantasy in the dullest months of the year.
Had I to choose only three places of installation you cannot afford to miss, they would be:
- SPECTRA because of its spectacular audio-reactive lights.
- Bay Lights because of its amazing size and magnificence.
- Interwoven with its entertainingness.
But in truth all the installations are worth viewing! They are all different and unique. You will not forget Illuminate SF either you are a resident of the city of San Francisco, or you are visiting it.
The festival demonstrates the power of art in uniting people and making our civic areas more beautiful and pleasant places to be. I already can't wait until the next year with the festival! Perhaps I see you there--remember to look for the girl with the big smile, who is standing and gawking up at all the beautiful lights.
